Our Sister Cities

  • In 1837, the notary Alphonse Daloz purchased the land comprising Le Touquet. At that time, the area consisted of dune on the Canche Estuary. However, by the end of the century, Le Touquet had become an attractive wooded location by the sea. British enthusiasm for the area as a seaside resort gave rise to greatly increased facilities and developed the resort’s activities and hotel trade. The prosperity of Le Touquet is inseparable from the British presence, but also from its proximity to Paris, just 2 hours away.

Between the two world wars, Le Touquet became a chic destination, dedicated to sport and elegance, heralding its modern-day reputation as the Garden of the Channel, where villas dot the quiet roads running through the forest, across the dunes and in the wooded hollows. Sports activities developed for vacationers include skeet shooting, hunting, horseback riding, tennis and golf. Casinos were built to attract more tourism and remain active today. More recently, Sand Yachting, 3-wheeled craft powered by the wind, has become a major attraction to the wide, sandy beach in Le Touquet.

  • County Meath is traditionally known as the “Royal County” because it contains the seat of the ancient High Kings of Ireland at the Hill of Tara. Older than the pyramids of Egypt, the passage graves of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth attract visitors the world over. Other places of interest include Slane Castle and historic Kells, where the Book of Kells originated. Kells also has 9th-century high crosses and a 1000-year-old Round Tower.

Apart from archaeological sites and beautiful views, you can enjoy a wide range of activities in Meath, from coarse and game angling to shooting and golf. The county is relatively flat and ideal for cycling and horse riding.

Navan is Meath’s county town and is famous for its fine furniture and carpets. Trim, on the river Boyne, is a charming medieval town with an astounding collection of ancient sites, including the largest Norman castle in Ireland. For a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, Drogheda is a bustling port town with excellent pubs and live music scene, including a summer Samba festival.

  • The source from which Markham draws its name is rich in both resonance and history. In 1791, the Township of Markham was named after William Markham, the Archbishop of York. In 1872, Markham was incorporated and grew to a population of 1,100 by 1891. Increased economic ties with Toronto led to the demise of the farm villages after the turn of the century. Beginning in 1945, the face of Markham began to change rapidly. It was no longer a community whose inhabitants worked locally. Rural Markham disappeared in the face of tremendous urban growth. Throughout this phenomenal growth, Markham’s roots endured.

Still rich in fertile farmland, Markam stands as Canada’s pre-eminent high technology center, known worldwide for innovative products and services. Today, Markam is well known as “Canada’s High-tech Capital.”

  • Bandırma, on the southern coast of the Marmara Sea, is an important port city in Türkiye, only two hours by ferry from Istanbul.

Bandırma is believed to have been founded between the 8th and 9th centuries BC. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great, and later fell in the hands of Rome and the Byzantines. In 1336, it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Today, it is part of the Republic of Türkiye.

The population is a melting pot of cultures. The local communities include Turks, Manavs, Yoruks, and Tatars from Crimea; Pomaks, who were originally Turks from the Balkans, and Albanians; also, Circassians and Georgians. Bandırma has several industries ranging from fertilizers, food, olives, sunflower oil, chickens, eggs, to mining, marble and stone operations. The Bandırma Bird Sanctuary National Park is home to 266 bird species as they migrate between continents. Covering an area of 64 hectares, the delta is one of the most important hatching areas for birds in Türkiye.
